Data protection

Data protection is key for any organization. In order to ensure it, various solutions are used on the market. The purpose of protection is to prevent data loss and to ensure access control. The strategy is to ensure that end users cannot intentionally destroy or steal data. These solutions overlap to some extent the functionality of other protection systems such as: Intrusion Prevention System; SIEM (Security Information and Event Management), endpoint protection systems, etc.

The use of data protection systems has grown significantly in recent years. According to recent research, by the end of 2021, 91% of organizations will have implemented data protection solutions. For comparison, in 2017, only 50% of organizations had integrated such solutions.

Two main types of data protection systems are used:

  • Specialized – stand-alone solutions that have built-in complex logic focused solely on data protection. They are usually expensive but have advanced functionality for effective data protection.
  • Integrated – more basic solutions that work together with other security products. They are focused on enforcing appropriate policies by using security tools already implemented in the infrastructure.

Most data protection systems use blocking actions, monitoring both incoming data and internal data access and output. They use machine learning algorithms and elements of artificial intelligence.
