Application delivery controllers are devices or virtual devices that are used in data centers and are located between firewalls and web servers. Redundancy, scalability and increasing the performance of applications is one of the main tasks of application delivery solutions. They use technologies for distributing traffic (load balancing) between web servers, data caching and SSL offloading (offloading the computing power used to encrypt connections from the servers).

The latest generation of such devices include many other indispensable features such as rate shaping (prioritizing requests to certain applications) and Web Application Firewall.
